Freedom Worship Assembly Baptist Church, began in the heart of Pastor Joshua M. Daniels in the summer of 2018. After serving as the Senior Pastor of one of Houston’s oldest African-American congregations, founded in 1866, for 2 years, Pastor Daniels received the mandate from God to resign as Pastor, and blaze forward with a new ministry that would be Christ-Centered, Bible-Based, and Spirit-Led. Though he witnessed much progress there and had many accomplishments to his credit, it was obvious to all that God was doing “a new thing”.
After much prayer and fasting, an Interest Meeting was held on July 17, 2018 at the Allen Parkway Village Community Center where Pastor Daniels announced to those who supported him that he would be resigning as pastor of the historic church and beginning a new work at the spirit of God’s leading. The question was raised from the floor immediately after this announcement, “So where are we following you?”
Pastor Daniels prayerfully obeyed the leading of the Lord and led the people in prayer, shared the vision of the church, reveled a new name, “Freedom Worship Assembly”, and all present expressed their desire to be apart of what they all sensed God was doing. This night a new work was birthed for God.
An Organizational Meeting was held at the Allen Parkway Village Community Center on July 31, 2018, presided over by Dr. Asa W. Sampson, Sr., where the 69 charter members voted to name the Church, Freedom Worship Assembly Baptist Church, and unanimously voted to have Rev. Joshua M. Daniels serve as the Senior Pastor of this new Church.
The first worship service was held on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Harper Alternative School in Houston, TX. The atmosphere was jubilant and the auditorium was filled with people, praise, and the power and presence of God. The saints who were in attendance signaled their willingness to remain aligned with a spiritual leader who, under the power of God, had deposited much into their spiritual growth since his arrival into the city of Houston. God’s hand was the driving force towards this “greater work” and has showed His favor and grace since her first day of existence.
In the words of Pastor Daniels, “Freedom started with zero dollars”, yet God has proved again and again that He will always provide. During their first month of existence as a congregation, the faithful and unselfish giving of the people of God immediately began to generate sufficient funding for the weekly maintenance and operations of the Church, its administrative staff, and a team of highly skilled musicians and singers who minister under a powerful anointing during each worship service.
In September of 2018, Pastor Daniels led the church to secure an office space that would be known as “Freedom Headquarters” to function as an administrative hub for our church and provide a place for meetings and trainings. The Church was able to acquire 1,600 square feet of space that helped to provide a stable address for the Church throughout the week while worshipping in a school auditorium on Sunday’s.
Services were held at Harper Alternative School from the first service in August 2018 until the 2nd Sunday of March 2019.
In March of 2019, Pastor Daniels announced to the congregation that God had told him it was time for the church to find a permanent location to call “home”. He informed the church that services would temporarily be held at the Courtyard Marriott as we pursued our permanent location.
Services were held at the Courtyard Marriott for two months. The membership of Freedom proved faithful, strong, resilient, and committed as they weathered the transition with grace and excellence. The membership remained dedicated, the services continued to be anointed, and Pastor Daniels continued to preach powerfully and lead us faithfully. Through Pastor Daniels’ leadership and the memberships generosity, the Church was able to acquire a permanent location within 7 weeks of transitioning into the Courtyard Marriott.
On Sunday, May 19, 2019, Freedom Worship Assembly held their first worship service in their permanent location located at 4718 Littlecrest Rd. The Dedication Service was held on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 4:00pm, with Dr. James Carrington and the Willing Workers Baptist Church of Houston and Texas City. National Gospel Recording Artist, Eric Carrington, led the Willing Workers Baptist Church Music Ministry, and the service was on fire from beginning to end!
